Post-Op Instructions

For your pet’s safety, please read and follow these instructions.

The Nutmeg Spay/Neuter Clinic will handle, at minimal cost, any post-op complications, only if these instructions were followed. Nutmeg cannot be held responsible for complications resulting from a client's failure to follow these instructions or for contagious diseases or parasites for which your pet was not previously vaccinated:

NO running, jumping, playing or strenuous activity for 7 to 10 days after surgery. Pets should stay indoors and be kept quiet. Walk dogs on a leash and keep cats inside durig this time.

Keep your pet dry for 7 to 10 days.  No baths, swimming or rolling in wet grass.  The top layer of the surgical incision is closed with dissolving suture. The tattoo is sealed with surgical glue and will come open if the area gets wet.

Check the incision twice a day.  What you see on the day you pick up your pet from our clinic is normal…there should be no discharge or swelling and minimal redness.  DO NOT let your animal lick the incision area. To ensure this will not occur, you will need to buy an “E-collar” (plastic lampshade) either at your vet or at a pet supply store.

Unless otherwise noted, there are no stitches to remove.  Your pet has stitches under the skin, which will dissolve over the next few months.

Feed and water your pet today; however, he/she may not have a full appetite until tomorrow. Do not change his/her diet or give table scraps as this can mask post-op complications.

Do Not give your pet any people medicines such as aspirin, Tylenol or Advil.  Your pet received pain medicine at the time of surgery plus a long-acting injectible pain medication called meloxicam, which lasts up to 24 hours. Please present your post-op sheet to your veterinarian should your pet need to be seen within 30 days after surgery. Some animals are 100% right away while others recover more slowly. Lethargy lasting more than 48 hours after surgery, diarrhea or vomiting are not normal and you should call our clinic at 203-690-1550 during business hours or your own vet on the days we are not here. Dogs may have a slight cough for a few days.

IF your pet has an emergency related to the surgery after hours, call the nearest 24-hour emergency vet for instructions. The numbers are located on your post-operative instructions.

Please read the attached instruction page you are given at checkout;  it has specific information about your pet’s surgery.  If you have questions and it is during the day Monday through Thursday, call the clinic at 203-690-1550. We will return your call as soon as possible and determine if your pet should come in for a recheck.

If it is after hours Monday through Thursday or is on Friday, Saturday or Sunday when we care closed, please refer to THIS LIST of participating veterinarians who will be happy to see your pet for a recheck if you have a concern. There is no cost for a recheck appointment except if the veterinarian needs to administer a medication or perform a procedure on your pet; that cost depends on what that particular veterinarian charges. The same applies to our clinic.

Pay it Forward.  We hope you are happy with the services your pet received at our clinic. Nutmeg Spay/Neuter Clinic is a non-profit organization and your tax-deductible donation will help continue our mission. Please also see our Wish List on our website at www.nutmegclinic.org.
